The Power of Taking a Timeout

We are living in an unexplainable time.  A time that is characterized by fear, loss, struggle, disappointments, and uncertainty; but at the same time, profound beauty.  Not everyone experiences a “massive historical moment” in their lifetime, but I can say that I have experienced several that in many ways parallel our current climate — the first being when I lived in NYC during 9/11, the second being a product of the US Economy crashing in 2008 — unexplainable times of my life where both good and bad emerged from tragedy.

What I learned during 9/11 is that I have an inner strength that emerged when faced with those tragic circumstances.  That strength was put to the test again in 2008 when I transitioned from having a comfortable, long-standing career in the NBA with a secure paycheck and health/401K benefits to taking the risk of becoming an entrepreneur and starting my dream of having my own live event production company.

Both times I can honestly say I didn’t know what was going to happen or when things were going to get better.  I found myself asking the question — what did I have to lose?  During this surreal time, a similar question is rattling around my head.  There is something bigger than all of us demanding that we change and adapt, and in this case, that we take a TIMEOUT and recognize what we appreciate and what we take for granted while the world repairs itself.  As I think about the purpose of taking a timeout, I think about the meaning behind it in different circumstances.  Coaches call timeouts during games when they need to refocus the attention of their team or adjust their strategy.  Children get put in timeouts when they need to calm down and think about being responsible with and for their actions.  Wherever they may be, timeouts are generally taken in an effort to spark change and better the situation at hand.

During this unique time in our history, I want to encourage discussions of how we can make the most of the timeout that the world is collectively experiencing right now and come out of it stronger as individuals, as an industry, and as a community.

These thoughts and my unique experiences have led me and my team to develop this course — designed to help us navigate this forced timeout — and how we can emerge stronger, better, and more prepared for the days ahead.

I hope you’ll join us.
